How to ballpark your own patio

You can get a rough range before anyone comes out. Measure the length and width of the area in feet and multiply them to get square feet. Multiply that by $30 for the low end and by $45 for the high end. If you are picturing plain concrete pavers in a simple shape, you will land near the bottom. If you want natural stone or a premium textured paver, plan for the top.

That number is for the patio on a proper base. It does not cover steps, a wall to hold back a slope, or work the yard needs before a patio can go in at all. Those are the things that make two patios of the same size come in at different totals, and they are covered further down.

Keep in mind that our projects start at $3,000. A very small pad can still be worth doing, but it will not come in under that, because the machine, the crew and the base material all have to show up for it.

What moves you between $30 and $45

The paver you pick does most of the work here. A standard concrete paver is made in big runs, lays fast and costs less per piece. Premium and textured pavers cost more per piece. Natural stone costs more again, and it takes longer to set because no two pieces are quite the same thickness or shape.

Pattern matters too. A straight running bond with square edges goes down quickly. Herringbone, circles, borders and inlays all mean more cuts, and every cut is labour. A curved edge looks great against a lawn, but it gets cut piece by piece along the line.

Shape counts for the same reason. A plain rectangle off the back of the house is the cheapest layout per foot. A patio that wraps around a corner, steps around a tree or meets a set of stairs adds cuts and edging along the way.

What moves the total beyond the paver

Grading comes first

Before a patio goes in, the ground has to send water away from your foundation. If the yard slopes toward the house now, it gets regraded first. Building a patio on ground that pushes water at the basement just puts a hard surface on top of the problem. If the yard holds water, our drainage page covers the fixes we use.

Access

If our machine can drive into the backyard, the digging and the base go in fast. If every load has to go through a narrow gate or around the house by hand, the same patio takes more hours. We look at access on the site visit because it changes the price more than most people expect.

What is there now

An old patio, a cracked slab or a pad of broken asphalt has to come out before anything new goes down. That removal is billed from $150 an hour plus disposal. Rock, roots and soft wet ground also add digging and base material.

Machine time and labour

Where a yard needs work outside the patio itself, our rates are $150 an hour for the excavator and operator and $75 an hour for labour. It all gets rolled into one flat written quote before we start, so there is no meter running that you did not agree to.

The base under the pavers

Most of what you pay for in a patio is under it. Every patio we build sits on 6 to 10 inches of compacted gravel base. The sod and topsoil come off, the gravel goes in and gets compacted in layers, and then the pavers are laid on top. Where the base lands in that range depends on the ground. Firm, well drained soil needs less. Soft ground or clay that holds water needs more.

Freeze-thaw is why this matters so much in Halifax. Water gets into a thin or poorly compacted base, freezes, swells and lifts the pavers. Then it thaws and they settle back unevenly. A few winters of that and you have a patio full of dips and trip edges. A deep, compacted base drains and stays put.

The joints get polymeric sand. It is swept in dry and then wetted, and it hardens enough to lock the pavers together and keep the joints from washing out. It also gives weeds and ants a harder time than plain sand does.

Brands we lay

We install Techo-Bloc, Permacon, Oaks and Shaw Brick. Each one makes several lines, from plain concrete pavers up to textured and stone look finishes, in a spread of colours and sizes. The brand and the line you choose is the biggest single reason a patio lands near $30 or near $45 a square foot.

If you are stuck between two pavers, think about where the patio sits. A patio off the kitchen gets daily traffic, a barbecue and dropped plates. A patio at the back of the yard might see a few chairs and a fire bowl. Spending more on the paver makes the most sense where you will look at it and use it the most.

Steps and walls are add-ons

Halifax yards are rarely flat. If the patio sits below a back door or the yard drops away, you will likely need steps, a wall, or both. These are priced on top of the patio.

Steps are quoted on the site visit, because the number of steps, the width and the material change from job to job. Retaining walls start from $75 per square foot. On our published example, a wall 20 feet long and 3 feet high, about 60 square feet, starts around $4,500. Segmental block goes in faster with consistent colours and a friendlier price. Natural granite armour stone costs more and stands up to freeze-thaw for generations. Either way, the wall gets drainage behind it and geogrid where the height calls for it. There is more detail on our retaining walls page.

Height also brings in permits. In HRM, a retaining wall over 1 metre, about 3.3 feet, on a serviced residential lot needs a Lot Grading Permit. Shorter walls usually do not, with exceptions near property lines and where drainage is affected. We handle the permit when one is needed.

When the patio is part of a bigger plan

If the patio is one piece of a full backyard, with walls, a walkway and a new lawn, it can make sense to plan it all at once. Our design and build projects start at $20,000. The design is done by an outside designer after a site visit with you, costs $500 to $1,500, and is fully credited if we build it. You keep the design either way.

How we quote a patio

We walk the property with you, look at the grade, the access and the ground, and talk through the pavers you like. Then we send one flat written quote within 24 hours of the site visit. Jack is on pretty much every job site, and every patio comes with a 1 year workmanship warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a paver patio cost in Halifax?

With Doucet, a paver patio costs $30 to $45 per square foot installed. Standard concrete pavers sit at the $30 end and premium, textured or natural stone at the $45 end. Steps, walls and prep work outside the patio are priced on top.

Why does the base under a patio matter so much?

Freeze-thaw heaves a thin or loose base. Water gets in, freezes and lifts the pavers, and they settle back unevenly. We build every patio on 6 to 10 inches of compacted gravel with polymeric sand in the joints so it drains and stays flat.

What paver brands does Doucet install?

We lay Techo-Bloc, Permacon, Oaks and Shaw Brick. The brand and the line you choose is the main thing that decides whether your patio lands near $30 or near $45 a square foot.

How much do steps or a retaining wall add to a patio?

Steps are quoted on the site visit. Retaining walls start from $75 per square foot, and a wall 20 feet long and 3 feet high, about 60 square feet, starts around $4,500. Walls over 1 metre on a serviced residential lot need an HRM Lot Grading Permit, which we handle.

What is the smallest patio job you take on?

Our projects start at $3,000. A small pad can still be worth doing, it just will not come in under that, because the machine, the crew and the base material all have to come out for it.

If a patio is on your list for next season, give us a call at (902) 221-4582 and book a time to walk the yard.
