Snow in the winter, excavation and stonework the rest of the year

Snow in the winter, excavation and stonework the rest of the year

Winter is snow clearing and salting across the HRM, which means early starts and callouts when it comes down. The rest of the year is excavation, grading, drainage, retaining walls, paver patios and stonework. It is outside, it is physical, and it does not stop. A lot of outfits around here put people off for four months every winter. We do not.

Working at Doucet: common questions

What does it pay?

Operators are $25 to $35 an hour and need two years of experience on a machine. Labourers are $17.50 to $25 depending on experience, work ethic and whether you stick. Hourly, and standby for snow is paid, not just the hours you are out plowing.

Is this seasonal work?

No. Snow clearing through the winter, excavation and stonework the rest of the year. A lot of outfits around here put people off for four months every winter. We do not.

Do I need experience on machines?

For an operator role, two years. For general labouring, no. We hire people with no machine time and train them. What matters more is showing up and working.

Do I need a driver’s licence?

It helps but it is not required. Someone who can get themselves to a site is worth more to us than someone who cannot, but we will talk about it either way.

What are the hours?

Full time. Winter means early starts and callouts when a storm comes in, including nights and weekends. The rest of the year is regular days on job sites across the HRM.

Where would I be working?

We are based in Tantallon and work across Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, Hammonds Plains, Cole Harbour and the rest of the HRM.

When do you need people?

Now. We are still laying brick and we are hiring for the winter at the same time. If you are good we want you this week, not in December.

Do I need a resume?

No. There is a spot to attach one if you have it, and a photo of it is fine. The application asks everything we need to know.

How soon will I hear back?

Usually within a couple of days. If you would rather just talk, call or text (902) 221-4582.
