Stump Removal in Halifax: Digging Out vs Grinding
Stump removal in Halifax: why Doucet digs stumps out with an excavator instead of grinding, when grinding is fine, and what drives the cost of the job.
Grinding leaves the roots in the ground. Digging out takes everything. Here is when each one makes sense, and why Doucet digs stumps out and hauls them away.
Stump Removal in Halifax: Why We Dig Stumps Out Instead of Grinding Them
There are two ways to get rid of a stump: grind it down below the surface, or dig the whole thing out, roots and all. Doucet does not grind stumps. We dig them out with an excavator at $150 an hour, haul them away, and leave ground you can build, pave or plant on.
Stump removal at a glance
How we do it: dug out with the excavator, roots and all, then hauled away
What we do not do: stump grinding
Rates: excavator and operator $150 an hour, labour $75 an hour
Best fit: lot clearing, new patios and driveways, additions, regrading
Minimum: our projects start at $3,000, so stumps usually come out alongside other site work

Grinding vs digging out: the honest difference
Stump grinding is a real service, and it does what it says. A grinder chews the stump down below the surface and leaves a pile of wood chips mixed with soil. The part you can see is gone. The roots are still in the ground.
Digging a stump out is a different job. The excavator works around the stump, breaks the main roots and lifts the whole root ball out of the ground. What is left is a hole, which gets backfilled and compacted. The wood leaves your property on a truck.
We only do the second one. That is not because grinding is wrong. It is because nearly every stump we deal with is sitting where something is about to be built, and a ground stump is still in the way of that.
What grinding leaves behind
The roots under a ground stump do not disappear. They rot slowly, and as they rot, the soil above them drops. A lawn over a ground stump can grow a dip. A patio or driveway laid over one can sink in that one spot while everything around it stays put.
The grindings are the other problem. Wood chips mixed into soil make a poor bed for sod or seed until they break down, and a bad base for anything hard. If the plan is to put something on that spot, the chips usually have to be dug out anyway, which means paying for the stump twice.
Rotting roots also tend to feed mushrooms that pop up in the lawn around the old stump, and soft, decaying wood can draw insects that like it. Neither is a disaster. Both are the kind of thing people do not expect after they have paid to have a stump dealt with.
None of that matters if the stump is at the back of the yard and all you want is to mow over it. It matters a lot if a patio, a driveway, a shed pad or a house is going there.
When grinding makes more sense
Fair is fair. Grinding is the better choice in a few situations, and if yours is one of them, a stump grinding company is who you should call.
You only want the stump gone from sight and nothing will be built on that spot
The stump is tight against a house, fence or foundation, where pulling the roots could disturb what is beside it
There is no way to get a machine into the yard
It is one stump and you have no other work planned
When digging out makes more sense
You are clearing a lot for a house, garage or addition
A patio, walkway or driveway is going over the spot
The yard is being regraded and the ground needs to be solid all the way down
There are several stumps, so the machine is already earning its time
You want it done once, with nothing left to rot under your lawn
This is why stump removal for us usually comes as part of a bigger job. When we do land and lot clearing, the stumps come out with the trees, brush and debris, and the site is left graded and ready to build. When we prep a yard for a patio or a new lawn, any stump in the way comes out first.
What drives the price
We charge by machine time, so the price depends on how long it takes to get the stump and its roots out and the hole filled. The excavator and operator is $150 an hour. Labour is $75 an hour where hand work is needed around the machine.
Size: how big the stump is and how far the roots spread
Tree type: some root systems hold on much harder than others
Count: several stumps in one visit spread out the cost of bringing the machine
Access: gates, fences, slopes and soft ground the machine has to work around
Hauling: loading the stumps and taking them away
Finish: backfilling the holes and grading the area
Our projects start at $3,000. One small stump on its own usually will not get there, which is the honest reason it tends to make more sense to group it with other work. A yard full of stumps, a clearing job, or a stump sitting where your new patio is going are all a good fit. If you want to see how bigger clearing jobs are priced, our land clearing cost article walks through it.

What the job looks like
We walk the property first and look at where the stumps are, what is around them, and how the machine gets in. Then you get one flat written quote within 24 hours of that visit.
On the day, the excavator digs around each stump, breaks the main roots and lifts it out. The stumps get loaded and hauled away. The holes get filled and compacted so they do not sink later, and the area is graded so it is ready for whatever comes next, whether that is topsoil and sod, a gravel base, or a footing.
If the trees are still standing, we take down small to mid-size residential trees too, so the tree and its stump come out in the same job. Bigger site work like digging for foundations and driveways is covered on our excavation page.
A note on doing it yourself
People do dig small stumps out by hand with a shovel, a bar and a lot of patience, and on a small softwood stump it can work. Once a stump is bigger than that, the roots usually win. Whichever way you go, call to have buried utilities located before you dig. Roots and service lines like the same ground.
Questions people ask
Does Doucet grind stumps?
No. We dig stumps out with an excavator and haul them away. If all you want is a stump ground flush and nothing is going over that spot, a stump grinding company is the right call.
How much does stump removal cost in Halifax?
We price it by machine time: $150 an hour for the excavator and operator, plus hauling. The size of the stump, how far the roots spread, how many stumps there are and how easy the access is decide how long it takes. Our projects start at $3,000, so stumps usually come out as part of clearing or prep work.
Is it better to grind or dig out a stump?
Grinding is quicker and leaves the roots in the ground to rot, which can make the soil sink later. Digging out takes the roots too, which is what you want under a patio, driveway, building or regraded lawn.
What happens to the hole after a stump is dug out?
We backfill it, compact it and grade the area, so it is ready for topsoil, sod, a gravel base or whatever is going there next.
Can you take down the tree and remove the stump in the same job?
Yes, for small to mid-size residential trees. The tree comes down and the stump comes out in the same visit.
