Most of what we do around Tantallon and the Bay is land and lot work. Working over granite changes how a landscape has to be built. Water that cannot soak away runs along the rock and comes out wherever it finds a low spot, which is often somebody’s basement. So the grading and the drainage get solved before anything decorative goes near it. Pavers on six to ten inches of compacted crushed stone. Walls with proper drainage behind them so frost has somewhere to push. Polymeric joint sand that stays put through a coastal winter. The base is what survives out here, not the finish.

How much does excavation cost in Tantallon?
The excavator and operator is $150 an hour and labour is $75 an hour. Most jobs are priced as one flat number after we walk the lot, because out here the rock usually decides the price. Projects start at $3,000.
Do you clear treed lots?
Yes. Trees, brush and stumps come off and the ground is left graded. We take down small to mid-size trees ourselves, and stumps are dug out with the excavator, not ground.
Do you build retaining walls around St. Margarets Bay?
